While making his living as a highly efficient contract killer, Latif (Mahershala Ali) nevertheless adheres to a strict moral code and devoutly observes his Muslim faith. But when his wife passes suddenly, he’s thrust into single parenthood, and his structured world is sent spinning off its axis. What begins as a desperate search for breast milk for his infant daughter unwittingly sets him on a collision course with Hwan Yoon (John Cho), a far-right faith leader who’s amassed a militia of outraged Texans and a dark vision for how they should be deployed.
After spending years trying to get a Blade reboot off the ground, writer-director Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) and Ali are finally afforded the opportunity to collaborate on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, a dizzyingly choreographed, deeply soulful thriller that practically erupts off the screen. And while its accomplished set pieces offer some of the year’s most visceral violence, it’s the themes of faith, grief, and responsibility that ultimately leave a mark.
