In the high plains of southern Georgia, the Armenian village of Gandzani holds a past that has never fully settled. In A Fire There, Montreal-based Lebanese-Armenian filmmaker Marlene Edoyan follows three teenage friends at the threshold of adulthood. Henrikh studies international affairs and dreams of democracy in Tbilisi. Karlen tends animals while imagining work in Russia. Hakob moves through daily labour as love, duty, and expectation begin to narrow around him.
Edoyan redefines what a coming-of-age film can be. There are no clean breakthroughs here, no easy escape from home. Instead, she observes the slower passage into adulthood shaped by geography, family, tradition, patriarchy, and the pull of elsewhere.
