Alexandra Lazarowich’s documentary takes us into the world of Indigenous hip-hop, profiling three of its special talents. Ash da Hunter is a female MC from Arizona, fighting an uphill battle in a male-dominated culture. Wiidaaseh is an alternative rapper and producer in Toronto, working as a cook while pursuing his dreams. Travis Thompson is the most commercially successful of the three thus far — based in Seattle and signed to a label, but in the process of transitioning to an independent artist.
Exploring her subjects’ personal lives as well as their career moves, Lazarowich creates a multifaceted portrait of each artist. Ash is shown reuniting with her father and working closely with her mother; Wiidaaseh is seen hunting and bonding with his father; Thompson is admirably candid about his struggles in the industry, as well as mistakes he’s made in his life. Last but not least, there’s the music: from Ash’s defiant aggression to Thompson’s soulful stylings to Wiidaaseh’s terrific production, it’s a feast for hip-hop lovers and novices alike.
