On May 27, 2023, 16-year-old Krzysztof Dymiński left home before dawn. He was last seen on Warsaw’s Gdański Bridge, above the Vistula River, where his father, Daniel, still returns day after day looking for answers. He builds a search boat. He uses cameras, drones, and metal detectors. He follows tips. He studies the water. He does this because stopping would mean facing what he can’t yet accept.
The facts of Krzysztof’s disappearance could invite a true-crime treatment, but director Michał Marczak chooses something harder to sit with. He follows Daniel to examine the labours that grief creates: charging batteries, checking equipment, following rumours, and returning home with nothing. The search puts Daniel’s anguish to work, but provides little healing. It also pulls him away from the family still waiting beside him. After premiering in Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition, Closure won the Golden Alexander at Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. This is a film that questions whether hope can sometimes be the very thing that keeps you trapped.
