Las Mujeronas brings together a collective of Flamenco Latinas in Vancouver in a powerful and emotionally charged exploration of immigration, identity, memory, and belonging. Performed in Spanish, Portuguese and English, with selected text translations for accessibility, the work weaves together flamenco dance, live music, poetry, and storytelling into an intimate theatrical experience that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Rooted in the intercultural history of flamenco and inspired by the Ida y Vuelta song forms that travelled between Spain and Latin America, Las Mujeronas honours the journeys, resilience, and emotional realities of women navigating migration and cultural displacement. Every movement, silence, rhythm, and musical phrase is infused with honesty and lived experience, creating a performance that feels raw, fearless, and profoundly human.
Under the direction and choreography of Jhoely Triana, the ensemble balances strength and vulnerability while celebrating sisterhood, ancestry, and the reclaiming of voice and space. The fusion of flamenco tradition with contemporary storytelling expands the art form beyond technique, revealing flamenco as a living language of resistance, connection, and emotional truth.
