About

The London Philharmonic Orchestra Co-Principal Cellist Henry Shapard, and former Principal of the VSO, is joined by acclaimed Canadian pianist Jane Coop, bringing their celebrated partnership to bear on a program of rare emotional depth and intimacy.

Bookended by two of Brahms' most beloved cello sonatas, this program invites audiences into the intimate world of one of music's great conversationalists — a composer who understood, perhaps better than anyone, how two voices could argue, console, and ultimately complete one another.

At the heart of the program stands Beethoven's Sonata in C major, Op. 102 No. 1 — a startling, visionary work from the composer's late period that seems to reach simultaneously backward into the baroque and forward into a future not yet imagined.

Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in F major, Op. 99
Beethoven’s Sonata in C major, Op. 102 No. 1
Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38
